Kinsmen: Not East, nor West is a transnational collaboration that seeks to explore the complex relationship of the Southern African Indian diaspora to the continent that they now call home. The work extends on themes investigated by Kinsmen in ‘Window to the Ashram’, 2017 and asks questions around gaps in history and contemporary relationships to conditions of migrancy, placelessness, belonging and agency. This project sees Kinsmen engage physically and spiritually with their relationship to the continent, the Indian ocean and the space between through a transcontinental collaboration between Johannesburg, South Africa and Antananarivo, Madagascar.
For the first leg of the project Kinsmen travel to Madagascar to collaborate with Tsanta Randriamihajasoa. There will be performances in Antananarivo from 28 April to 3 May 2020. The second leg of the collaboration will take place later in the year across the ocean in Johannesburg, South Africa, culminating in the performance and the recorded documentation of the project as an EP to be released in late 2020.
