3 weeks — Dance
Jürg Koch is a dance teacher and choreographer from Bern who works in the area of disability and diversity.
Over his three-week residency in January 2018 with The Flatfoot Dance Company Koch will be teaching, choreographing and exchanging dance methodologies that will culminate in a performance to be hosted during a two-day colloquium.
Though now living in Switzerland, his recent 10 year tenure in Seattle at the University of Washington saw him push this arena of disability dance practice and he is arguable one of the most important global practitioners – he has successfully combined an academic focus and a performance/choreographic focus and thus is ideal for this colloquium.
Flatfoot Dance Company is based in KwaZulu-Natal and is one of South Africa’s leading contemporary dance companies with work that includes a full performance portfolio of dance performances (both local and international), a professional skills dance training programme a community dance portfolio that sees the company running 10 township based dance programmes and working with about 800 youth per annum.
The colloquium , to be held on 31 January and 1 Feb, seeks to accomplish two main outcomes; to push the shared knowledge and practice based learning around integrated dance studies in South Africa with a focus on revising the idea of dance as a tool for ‘Living Democracy’ , and to create a learning space that allows members of the professional arts community to interface with community based organisation, dance practitioners and educators.
